The vision of working in private practice as an IBCLC began for me back in 2011. Since then, I have been piecing together the framework incrementally, moving at the pace of a snail for the first 5 or 6 years. During this time, I utilized my local Small Business Development Center (SBDC), which is locally housed within Ohio University, to learn more about the business side of my vision. You are probably reading this, wondering to yourself where you might begin your private practice journey. I promise you will not regret beginning with a call to your local SBDC. This initial meeting has connected me with countless other opportunities, particularly, being connected with unique working groups of students from the Ohio University College of Business. I had a whole team of college students, majoring in business assigned to working on my real life business as a project for class, it was amazing and I am so grateful. Networking leads to opportunity. I can confidently say, without a doubt, utilizing my resources locally has been just as important to my success in private practice, as learning from other private practice IBCLCs has been.
I would also like to take this opportunity to proclaim my gratitude for technology! It has become SO much easier to work independently because the tools to do so are available to us.
